Charterhouse Tree Care provides stump grinding services on domestic and commercial properties. In our role as locally trusted tree surgeons, we strongly advise removing a tree stump in the aftermath of a tree felling. Ideally, this work should be carried out as soon after tree removal as possible, but we have cutting-edge machinery capable of tackling stumps that have been in place for years. However, combining stump grinding with other tree surgery services eliminates the need for a follow-up visit, meaning our customers and clients receive a more cost-effective solution.
We perform this service in our hometown of Guildford as well as neighbouring Surrey and Hampshire locations like Cranleigh, Farnham, Godalming, Haslemere and Hindhead.
While tree stumps can be left in the ground, doing so leaves property owners vulnerable to numerous risks, including:
• Suckering – New shoots have the potential to stem from roots and the remaining trunk. While one tree may be removed, numerous others might grow in its place
• Disease – Dead tree stumps won’t produce suckers, but they do attract fungi and bacteria, like honey fungus, that can spread to otherwise healthy plants
• Trip & Fall – At ground level, tree stumps pose an often unseen trip and fall hazard. Naturally, this can lead to various types of injury
Aside from these dangers, tree stumps also blot their surroundings. As an eyesore, they distract attention away from otherwise impeccable gardens and lessen the impact of a first impression made by a commercial property. In addition, tree stumps also place limitations on other projects like landscaping, reinstating a driveway or laying a patio.

What is Stump Grinding?
The process of stump grinding involves physically reducing a tree stump to a sub-ground level through the use of specially designed machinery. These stump grinding machines come equipped with a cutter head that has carbon-tipped teeth. This circular wheel has carbon-tipped teeth offset at varying angles. When engaged by one of our tree surgeons over the tree stump at hand, the cutter head spins at high speed, grinding the stump down to a specified depth.
Shallow stump grinding reduces remnants to approximately 8 to 10 inches below the soil line. If simply being covered by a lawn or flower bed, this will suffice as the surface will no longer be affected while the remaining roots safely rot underground.
For customers and clients in Guildford, Godalming and the surrounding areas thinking of undertaking more extensive landscaping work, we can grind to a depth of approximately 12 inches.
We carry out stump grinding because it achieves the best results for our clients. We steadfastly avoid the use of chemical treatments still used by other tree surgeons. As an environmentally friendly company, we always work in the best interests of nature.
Part of this policy involves recycling the resulting sawdust and chippings from our stump grinding work to ensure that nothing goes to waste. We can either use it to backfill the hole left behind by the stump or remove it from the site to use it elsewhere as a nutrient-rich mulch.
